A business year review that will launch you into 2023
As we near the end of December, most of us are entering a quieter business period as clients and customers take time off to be with their friends and families. Hopefully, you have plans to do the same! But before you do, this is a great time to review the year you and your business just had. Doing so will see you enter the new year with strong intentions and clarity.
There are many ways to come at a yearly business review. Over the years, Iโve done most of them. These days, depending on how much time and energy I have at the end of the year, I will do either a four-question review or a 20-question review.
To do them properly, you need to carve out one to two hours of uninterrupted time to sit down and properly reflect. You donโt need to write clear and perfect answers to the review questions immediately. You can jump from one question to another, write your thoughts and answers stream-of-consciously, and then revisit to tidy up at the end.
If youโre someone who likes to speak rather than talk, you can speak your thoughts into your phone and get them automatically transcribed (apps like Rev, Otter and Temi are ones Iโve used and found work well).

Whether youโre writing or talking, the most important thing is to come at your review with self-honesty. No one needs to see your answers but you. And no oneโs grading your answers either. The more honest you are with yourself, the more likely youโll get the kind of insights that set 2023 up to be your best-ever year.
Here are the questions I work through for the two types of review.

As noted above โ itโs best to permit yourself to work your way through the questions in whichever order works for you (i.e. if you get stuck on a question, move on to the next, donโt stay stuck there), and make rough/stream of consciousness notes along the way. If you try to write insightful, articulate and โperfect’ answers the first time through, you will miss out on the kind of insights that get shaken out when your mind is free to roam and go on tangents.
Once youโve been through all the questions the first time, take a little break; maybe even a full dayโs break. Then come back to your reflections, tidy up your answers and read them through.
I guarantee the clarity youโll take with you into 2023 from doing the above will be something you will appreciate for the next 12 months. Enjoy!
