When we wrote our guide to going it alone, we intended it to have a healthy shelf life. But we didnโt expect to read a fresh, new summary a dozen years on! One has just been published and itโs a nice little read.
I met Fern Chang at a small business event recently and she was so engaged and active in my presentation, that I presented her with a book as a gift.
Serendipitously, a few weeks later, she popped up in my inbox announcing that as a hobby she wrote book summaries for Actionable Books and sheโd written one for Flying Solo: How to go it alone in business.
Fernโs summary consists of a brief overview of the book along with some key insights that can be readily applied to your business.
She opens with a quote from page 13:
“The happiest soloists succeed because they have the knack for putting work in its proper place alongside the rest of their lives.”
And moves on to summarise the traits of a successful soloist, the importance of word-of-mouth referrals, and how and why to create an operations manual for your business.
I started Flying Solo and had the pleasure of being ‘head honcho’ for a dozen or so years. Since selling the business to David Kochโรรดs, Pinstripe Media in late 2017, I’ve returned to my roots.
While I continue to write for Flying Solo, produce their podcast and pop up as a presenter and facilitator, I spend the bulk of my time working as a ‘venture strategist’ supporting those going in alone in business.
Being a 60-something, a niche I’m increasingly immersed in is that of the ‘older entrepreneur’. In this role I demystify the process of creating smart, lifestyle-led enterprises and help ensure they turn into viable businesses.
