Frederike Moodie, Ondetto
Go for a walk. I find that it really refreshes my mind and I usually come up with some good ideas. It also gives me a chance to get out of my home office and catch some sunshine, possibly have a quick chat with the neighbours and I might pick up a sneaky coffee on the way too.
I studied international business at university and always had a bunch of vague business ideas. However I didn’t have the courage to quit a fairly well paying job to take the plunge and start my own business. Moving from London to Geelong was the perfect opportunity as I had nothing to lose by starting a business. There was no job to quit and no mortgage to pay (yet) so it was a great time to give it a go and start offering web design for Geelong businesses.
Arriving in Geelong after having spent 15 month on our bicycles cycling from London to Geelong, via Europe, Turkey, Iran, India, South East Asia and then from Darwin through the centre of Australia. My husband and I cycled 18,200km and crossed 17 countries.
Yoga. I try to go to classes twice a week and it really helps me stay balanced and focused. I get grumpy if I don’t get my yoga fix.
My husband and my daughter. Our family time always brings me back to what is really important.
The best thing is the flexibility of working hours, meeting new clients with interesting businesses, and being my own boss. The worst thing is carrying all the responsibility for the business and client projects by myself.
Try to build recurring revenue. If you can offer some services or products that clients need on an ongoing basis, this can really create a great baseline for your monthly income and even out the fluctuations that are inherent in project work. I think ‘passive income’ is a bit of a myth as you always need to do something to support this, but recurring revenue is definitely a winner.
Take advantage of the multitude of local business groups and online communities. They are great for meeting people who are also just starting out, as well as more experienced practitioners who can help mentor the ‘newbies’. ย Depending on your business they can also be a good source of referrals.
Helping clients turn their vision into reality. Many small business owners are confused about how to set up and optimise their digital presence. Advising clients can be very rewarding.
T-shirt, jeans and Ugg boots. I don’t do great work when I have cold tootsies!
