In the world of small business weโre always talking about being unique, developing a point of difference, standing out. Sadly getting noticed can be followed by getting copied, but itโs not the end of the world, far from it.
Here are my fab four benefits of being copied.
1. Youโll be better prepared
In most cases, the first instance of copying is more cheeky than serious. These days itโs very easy to knock up a website, or produce a brochure, that appears to have very similar offerings to your own. Plagiarism is not uncommon. But success is far more than a slick shopfront or sales aid.
Yes itโs annoying, but breathe deeply and be thankful.
2. Youโll dig deeper
A challenger can copy what you do, they canโt copy who you are.
Look at what you do best, what you do that only you can do, and strive to do it better.
In many cases a challenger pops up because they believe theyโve found a weakness or seen a gap. Your job is to strengthen and fill.
In the meantime, seek solace in the fact someone else has thought โThis personโs on to something.โ
3. Youโll learn and accelerate
Copycats rarely copy one business. You may view their work as a personal attack, but itโs more likely you are one of a handful of unwitting crash test dummies.
Burrow under their hood, understand their rationale and plan your refresh.
4. Competition makes you sharper
Finally, remember that competition really is good. Itโll keep you on your toes, push you to constantly improve and will open up the market to more custom.
So have you been copied and if so, what was your experience? Share it below and donโt worry, we wonโt pinch a word of it.
