It’s tax time, folks: ATO gives the green light to lodge
After months of waiting for your income info to land in the system, the ATO has finally given Aussies the thumbs-up to hit submit on their tax returns.
If your tax is pretty straightforward (no crypto empire or side hustle explosion), chances are your details are now pre-filled and ready to go. According to Assistant Commissioner Rob Thomson, the ATO has processed more than 91 million pieces of info from employers, banks, health funds and government agencies. So the bulk of the hard yakka is already done.
“You’ve been patiently waiting, but now you’re good to go!” said Thomson.
“Whether you’re lodging through a registered tax agent or doing it yourself via myTax, your pre-fill info should be there.”
That said, don’t just click ‘submit’ and hope for the best. The ATO recommends checking over the details to make sure nothing’s missing. Especially if you’ve got a side hustle, gig work, or you’ve been offering services through an app. All income needs to be declared, no matter how small.
The ATO has 40 different industry and occupation-specific guides to help you figure out what you can and can’t claim (yes, even that dodgy desk chair you bought in March might qualify).
Thomson says if you’re claiming deductions, make sure you’ve got the records to back it up.
“No one wants the stress of a surprise audit,” he added.
In a win for your digital safety, the ATO app has also been given a security boost. New features include real-time alerts when changes are made to your account and an instant lock function if something doesn’t feel right. It’s perfect for keeping the bad actors at bay.
“Fraudsters are getting smarter, but so are we. These new app features give taxpayers peace of mind, knowing they’re in control of their info 24/7,” said Thomson
You can also track the progress of your return through the app or myGov once you’ve lodged. Just don’t bug the ATO. It’s not going to speed up the pace of your return. Most refunds are processed within two weeks, and there’s no secret fast lane.
You’ve got until 31 October to lodge your return, or to sign up with a registered tax agent if you want more time.
Here’s hoping you have a cheeky refund in your future.
