More help for small businesses in dispute
Small and family businesses dealing with tricky disputes now have access to more affordable legal advice, thanks to an expanded support service from the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO).
Key points
โThis is really good news for small businesses who might be facing a big, well-resourced opponent in mediation but arenโt sure of their legal standing or what solutions are on the table,โ Billson says.
Until now, the subsidised legal advice scheme focused mainly on helping small businesses with tax disputes involving the ATO. But under the expanded program, businesses can now get support for a wider range of commercial disputes, especially where industry codes are involved.
โWith the governmentโs backing, we can now assist more small and family businesses to prepare for alternative dispute resolution processes across a broader range of issues,โ Billson explains.
That includes disputes in industries where power imbalances are common, like franchising. These will be a key focus for the service moving forward.
The goal is to help small businesses resolve disputes without the stress, time and expense of going to court. Instead, the ASBFEO works to facilitate fair outcomes through mediation, giving both parties a chance to get back to business with relationships intact.
โSince we launched in 2016, weโve helped over 50,000 small businesses,โ Billson says. โAt a time when small business owners are facing all sorts of challenges, we want them to know weโre here to help. Whether itโs through education, resources, or direct support, we want to make sure no business fails simply because they didnโt know where to turn.โ
Small businesses keen to find out more or check if theyโre eligible for help can call 1300 650 460 or visit theย ASBFEO website.
