“Another challenge is a small workspace that doesn’t allow for business growth. Expansion and relocation can have considerable costs that take time and focus away – and it almost always impacts productivity.”

Thankfully, there are some proactive ways you can maximise what little space you have in order to work as efficiently as possible.

Cafarella has a few pieces of advice to help you make the most of any small office space:

1. Take advantage of the ‘vertical’: “Use the vertical space when the floorspace is limited – for example, with wall-mounted shelves and storage units.”
2. Invest in multifunctional furniture: “Multifunctional furniture can be versatile in adapting to different scenarios, such as a room and desk divider, which can also be transformed into a portable whiteboard or storage unit.”
3. Good layout and clear zoning: “A well-planned layout and clear zoning can help maximise space and keep good flow in a small office.”
4. Add a few storage solutions: “Storage solutions help to organise and declutter the office. They are more than just about saving time and being more efficient. They also help to keep your office looking professional and productive.”

When it comes to specific products that can add storage while also making organising your small office easier, Cafarella has a few recommendations:

Smart decorations like pegboards can help you keep everything organised and your jobs on track. They also act as a place to add personal touches like inspirational pictures, photos of your loved ones and long-term goals for your business.

Then there’s the task of how to balance aesthetics with functionality in a small office setting.

To get started, write down both your needs and your wants for planning the perfect workspace. This should include the size of your desk, the number of storage units you want, the style and look of your dream office, and any other must-haves.

“Make sure you select furniture in colours and materials that reflect your style,” Cafarella advises. “Add artwork and decorative items that reflect personal style too, but that don’t overwhelm the space.”
