5 tips to boost your email marketing campaigns

email marketing

One of the most (and best) effective tools for businesses when connecting with their defined audience/s is email marketing. Digital marketing expert Adam Stewart says if you struggle to see the value of emails then it’s time to pause, recalibrate and strategise.

In this quick guide, I’m sharing 5 practical tips to improve your email marketing campaigns that have been helpful for many businesses in Melbourne (personally speaking from experience having assisted these businesses).

Tips to boost your email marketing campaigns

Segment your audience

Before anything else, re-think your messages. Start by sectioning your email list into segments (demographics, behaviours, or purchase history, etc.). I tell my clients to categorise subscribers by age, location, or even interests. This personalised approach not only makes your content more relevant to each group but also significantly increases engagement rates.

Craft compelling subject lines

The subject line is your first impressionโ€”make it count! If in the physical world we greet people with enthusiasm and a welcoming tone, then in the digital world, we have to step up even further especially when it comes to email subject lines.

Some tips to keep in mind when creating your subject line: be clear, concise, but intriguing, incorporate action words (if applicable) or pose a thought-provoking question to build interest.

Also, one of the things I often come across with some of the start ups I have worked with would be the absence of A/B testing of subject lines. Testing these usually doesn’t come as the first things to test but it will help you find what’s effective for each segment.

Utilise A/B testing

In general don’t limit your efforts to testing subject lines but instead test anything that you canโ€”elements of your email campaigns, the timing, etc. This includes experimenting with various types of contentโ€”such as newsletters, promotional offers, and informative articlesโ€”as well as visuals like images, graphics, and overall layout.

Calls to action are also key; try different wording or placement to see what drives engagement.

The moment you analyse the results of your testing efforts you’ll see the outliers, errors, areas to improve, sections that are effective, the best time to send, and a whole lot more which will help in optimising your next campaigns.

Incorporate clear calls-to-action (CTAs)

Just like what I previously mentioned with subject lines and in-person greetings, your call-to-actions should be clear, friendly and well received. Clear in a sense that readers quickly get what they should do or accomplish, and friendly so that you don’t sound bossy (after all, they can’t hear you!).

A strong and compelling CTA not only captures attention but also drives conversions, helping to turn casual readers into engaged customers.

Aside from using the right tone and wording, where your CTA is placed also matters so be mindful of that.

Monitor and analyse performance

If A/B testing is part of email marketing, then analysing key metrics and setting up these metrics are also part of it. These metrics usually are: open rates, click-through rates (CTR), and conversion rates. Utilising robust analytics tools allows you to gather valuable data that not only informs your overall strategy but also enables you to identify trends and patterns in user behaviour.

When you finally gather information and data on your emails, you now have what you need in order to optimise and change (whether that be in increments or a total overhaul).

Common reasons your email marketing campaigns may fail

Now that I’ve walked you through some of the measures that help boost your email campaigns, there are still many ways that campaigns can fall short of expectations. Here are some of them:

  • Neglecting mobile optimisation
  • Inadequate audience research
  • Overloading with content
  • Ignoring email frequency
  • Failure to personalise beyond the first name

Successful email marketing should be based on strategic-data-driven approaches that combines audience understanding, compelling content, and lots of testing. By implementing the tips outlined aboveโ€”such as audience segmentation, crafting engaging subject lines, and monitoring performanceโ€”you can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your email campaigns. Adapt and refine your tactics continually, and you will not only improve engagement but also drive conversions that contribute to your business growth. Embrace these practices, and watch your email marketing initiatives flourish.
