Out-of-the-box business practices to build a better business

Whether you are a new entrepreneur just getting started, a seasoned owner and operator of multiple businesses, or somewhere in between – successfully creating, managing and growing businesses can be achieved. And it might be much easier than you think! writes Access Consciousness founder Gary Douglas.

If you’d like to go beyond the status quo of marginal success in business; if you are willing to break out of the box of the traditional ideas of commerce; and if you will commit to ‘never give up, never give in and never quit’ – success and the acquisition of wealth are available for you.

These are my top four out-of-the-box business building concepts:

1. It does not have to be difficult

Most people build their business through difficulties. The conclusion is that if the business survives through difficult times, then somehow, the success is deserved. Do you deserve air? Do you breathe it anyway? What if a successful business was the same? You simply breathe it in and breathe it out and you don’t have a point of view about it.

You can create your business through difficulties or through possibilities, and your point of view determines which it will be. If you choose the point of view that creating a business can be as easy as breathing air, then you will see possibilities that you did not see before, and things will show up as if by magic.

2. Time is not a commodity

Most people see time as a commodity. Time is not a commodity; time is a possibility. It can be altered and changed in ways to work for you more.

When my kids were growing up, they would want to stay up late. I told them, “Fine, stay up late. Just clean up your mess in the kitchen before you go to bed.” I would come down in the morning and do you think the kitchen was clean? No. I would get to work cleaning the mess, complaining about it the entire time and it would take a couple of hours. After several days of this, I recognised that my kids were never going to clean up their mess before they went to bed, and I was no longer going to have the point of view that they should.

The next morning, I woke up and of course the kitchen was a mess. I got to work and the whole kitchen was clean within ten minutes. It was then that I realised when you have no point of view, you get things done in mere minutes. If you have judgement, it takes hours.

3. Don’t try to copy others 

Often business owners look at other entrepreneurs who are successful and copy what they do. Many people try to make money in the same way. One of the problems with this is that you aren’t most people. You are definitely different and that is your strength. Live by that difference rather than the sameness of others. Others have a way of creating business that is their way. Discover what your way is and do that.

You discover your way by asking questions:

• “What would be fun for me to create?”
• “What could I add to my business that would allow me to create something even greater than I already am?”

Receiving information from other business owners is fine, just don’t try and mimic them. Be the definitely different gift of you in the way you build your business.

4. Stop avoiding mistakes 

If you desire to create something – anything – there will be mistakes. So what? Get up, dust yourself off and try again.

When we look at what our choices create, rather than labelling them as mistakes, we gain awareness that contributes to our lives and our futures. You can take only calculated risks in an attempt to not make mistakes, or you can recognise that mistakes will be made, and the important thing is to learn from them and keep going.

Business can be difficult, or it can be filled with possibilities. You can function from the idea that there is never enough time, or you can recognise that when you don’t have a point of view about what actions are required, you can get things done in a fraction of the time it ‘should’ take.

You can underestimate you and the gift that you are in your business, giving up your unique way of conducting business and making money, or you can take information from others, ask questions and do what works for you.

Stay within the box or bust out of the box? It really all comes down to this: “Would I rather create my business through difficulties or through possibilities?” Whatever you choose is what you will create.
