Soloist Spotlight: Samantha Eckford, McFarlane Copywriting

Our Soloist Spotlights showcase the services our amazing Flying Solo Business Class members offer to customers in Australia, and take a peek behind the curtain of their day-to-day lives. This week, meet Sam Eckford, founder of McFarlane Copywriting, based in Sydney’s beautiful northern beaches.

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

Im a copywriter, author and content writer. I specialise in optimising copy for SEO and I love exploring and implementing tone of voice and branding. Being a fiction author as well, I love the story telling aspects of a lot of blog writing and content.

What was your first job – and what did it teach you about working life?

My first job was as a canteen worker at the Cronulla Sharks ground! But … I was also a police officer for 18 years. This taught me a LOT about people and how to talk to them, persuade them and manage them. I’ve always been amazed at how many skills and life experiences I am able to take from my time in the Police and use in not only my every day life, but my writing as well.

When did you know you wanted to start your own business?

I fell into it accidentally, to be honest. I knew that I wanted to write and that’s how simple it was. I already had published a few books in my crime thriller series, and the idea of writing and being paid for it was a pretty sweet idea!

What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?

Being my own boss, being able to work around my life and commitments with the family. Sometimes it gets a bit lonely – but at the same time I have found an online community or two of copywriters and it feels like a virtual water cooler. 😉

Share the biggest challenge you face at work?

My own imposter syndrome. I know I can do that job – and I’ve proven both to myself and others that I can do it … but that ol’ imposter syndrome pops up a little too often!

What would you say is your greatest strength? And weakness?

Strength: Relating to people and listening to what they need.

Weakness: Hmmm … maybe that imposter syndrome. 😉

What inspires you most about your work?

Words have so much power. I love using words to talk to people and relate on each and every level.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned this year?

That being persistent and stepping outside my comfort zone reaps reward.

The best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

Not to give up. And to keep pushing for what you want.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Take the risk and jump in. Nothing will happen if you don’t make it happen!

Where and when do you have your best ideas?

It’s always in the shower when I can’t write them down!

And finally, what’s your number one way to wind down from work?

Walking the dogs or watching re-runs of Friends.
