What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?
I’m a human resources consultant for small to medium businesses, enabling them to drive profits through their existing team and comply with the law. One of my greatest pleasures is being of service and helping my customers.
When did you know you wanted to start your own business?
I suspect I always had a leaning or drive to have my own business. The real push to get going was when I became a parent, so I could work around caring for my child.
Who, or what, is your biggest inspiration?
My grandmother, who started her own businesses at a time when most women were at home raising their children. She did raise her children but also ran a successful food business in Europe.
What’s your proudest moment?
There are a few. On a personal level, graduating from university and raising my child. On a business level, it’s whenever I achieve a success for one of my customers.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned this year?
That there’s always more to learn, and change is constant.
What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?
The flexibility is the best thing. I set my own hours and choose who I want to work with.
The worse thing is the isolation. I make up for that by having a network of friends and associates to brainstorm or socialise.
What’s the biggest challenge you face at work?
Competing demands on my time, especially when I’m feeling flat. If I have a free half-hour, I typically do a workout or go for a walk to clear my head and get my blood flowing.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
To know your numbers, particularly what your operating costs are, and to make sure you balance your accounts. Put away a percentage for profits first.
Where and when do you have your best ideas?
In the middle of the night, so I keep a notepad and pen handy.
What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?
Don’t believe the ‘overnight success’ stories – business is tough going! And don’t give up when you hit a hurdle – go over it, or under it, or maybe even around it.
What would your parents say is your greatest strength? And weakness?
Strengths: My sense of humour and fun, my drive, and my energy.
Weaknesses: I love to talk, I get side-tracked, and I never stop thinking.
And finally, what are your hobbies?
I love the ocean, animals, and outdoor activities. To wind down, I enjoy walking, especially near the ocean or better still, on the beach.
