Weddings, parties, anything: NSW prepares to ease restrictions despite rising case numbers

NSW is set to ease further restrictions for the vaccinated and unvaccinated from tomorrow (December 15) despite a rise in local transmissions overnight.

NSW’s coronavirus cases have reached a 10-week high of 804 new infections in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. It’s the highest number of locally acquired transmissions since October 2 when 814 cases were acquired.

The news comes as the state prepares for unvaccinated people to reenter the community and a further easing of restrictions for local businesses.

Further restrictions to ease from December 15

From tomorrow (15 December 2021), unvaccinated residents will be allowed to enter non-essential retail, hospitality venues and gyms. NSW businesses will also face a further easing of restrictions.

• density limits no longer apply
• most premises are open to all people, regardless of vaccination status
• proof of vaccination is only required at high-risk venues
• QR check-in is now only needed for certain high-contact premises (eg hospitals and pubs)
• face masks no longer need to be worn in many indoor areas.

Although the public health orders now permit entry to businesses for people who are not fully vaccinated, Service NSW advises some businesses may make it a condition of entry that you are fully vaccinated or wear a face mask.

NSW Health strongly advises people to get fully vaccinated and wear a face mask where they cannot socially distance themselves.

The new rules and restrictions for vaccinated and unvaccinated

Masks

If you are over the age of 12, you must still wear a face mask:

• at a public transport waiting area
• while on public transport
• at airports and on aircraft when the aircraft is flying above NSW
• for indoors front-of-house hospitality staff who are not fully vaccinated.

Masks are no longer required in outdoor settings.

When you need to check-in

COVID-19 Safe QR check-ins are only required at

• pubs, small bars and registered clubs
• hairdressers, spas, nail, beauty, waxing, and tanning salons, tattoo parlours and massage parlours
• gyms (except dance, yoga, pilates, gymnastics, and martial arts studios)
• hospitals (except patients of hospitals or hospitals with an electronic entry recording system that records sufficient information such that it can be used for contact tracing)
• residential care facilities or hostels (except in relation to the residents)
• places of public worship
• funeral, memorials and gatherings afterwards
• nightclubs
• strip clubs, sex on premises venues, sex services premises
• indoor music festivals with more than 1000 people.

If you are entering premises where check-in is required, you must:

• check-in with the Service.NSW app or
• provide your details to the occupier of the premises.

Bye-bye to vaccination evidence

Most premises in NSW are now open to everyone, regardless of whether you are fully vaccinated or unvaccinated. You no longer need to show evidence that you are fully vaccinated at most premises in NSW.

However, you still need to show evidence that you are fully vaccinated if you

• attend an indoor music festival with more than 1000 people
• work in certain industries.

Vaccinated and unvaccinated to hit the shops

Both vaccinated and unvaccinated can now visit retail or business premises.

• Customers and staff are not required to be fully vaccinated or carry vaccination evidence.
• COVID-19 Safe Check-in is not required (except at personal services businesses).
• Face masks are not required.

Retail and businesses are no longer required to have a Safety Plan.
