Tasman Tudor is on a mission to end data creep. As the owner of Scale It Consulting, he helps small business owners unravel the tangle of their daily data needs advising them on how to digitally transform their businesses.

Tasman sat down with Flying Solo to give us the lowdown on his business and soloist life.

You’ve got a free half-hour during your workday. What do you do?

I love to research new trends, innovations and technologies.  There are so many exciting and brilliant innovations out there by people who should be celebrated for taking the risk to create something. Also making time for a walk and listening to a podcast or two.

When did you know you wanted to start your own business?

Once upon a time I had an accounting practice with my Dad, so that bug has always been there.  Being inspired by so many other business owners that create on a daily basis was great, this led me to my first startup – a telecommunications hardware device.

What’s your proudest moment?

Presenting my start-up product at CES after just six months of development – hardware and software/app.  We also did some crazy marketing – a 3D video for Google Cardboard with printed promos and a media invite on the cardboard.  We believe that was a world first and got worldwide attention.  We were even called the most innovative product by a couple of media outlets.  It was pretty cool.  Unfortunately, we did not quite make it in the end – it was an MBA without the letters!!!

What’s your number one way to wind down?

During the summer, it is cricket, cricket, cricket.  I coach several junior teams which is great fun – seeing boys and girls develop a love for the game.  Also is a great way to develop your communication skills – simple, clear messages make the difference.

What’s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?

Before COVID, being a soloist was all about not worrying about traffic and balancing a family life – now everyone knows this!

Compliance and red tape – we all know how much fun this is! NOT!

What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?

It is always about the customer – being customer focussed in everything you do.  Whether it is the systems you are looking to implement, products you are offering, or culture you are trying to build, the customer needs to be front and centre.

Where and when do you have your best ideas?

I am a highly creative person, so I have a brainstorming session most mornings before and at the end of the day as part of my routine – sometimes it is for 5 minutes, sometimes half an hour.  This brain dump, then enables me to focus on the daily tasks/clear mind for the next day.

As an example, you will note on my blog, as a point-of-difference, I will be drawing all my blog images – unfortunately I am not an artist, but they will add a fun touch.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Go for it – but start out as a side hustle if you can.  When you jump in, have a clear routine as part of your day.   Staying disciplined is also important, do a list and tick them off – I use a free project management tool, that keeps me on track.

What would your mum say is your greatest strength? And weakness?

She would say that I have an entrepreneurial mind and I have a passion to see others succeed.  This can see me go the extra mile for my clients.

She would say I probably work too hard at times by taking lots on, but I say – give a busy person a task to get it done!

What do you wear to work?

I have been known to do the “newsreader” – shorts and thongs underneath, business attire up top for virtual meetings!  But if going out to clients, it is pants and shirt.

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

There are now apps for everything!  This has created technology creep in so many businesses with lots of connected (and disconnected) business apps. My mission is to end the data mess (see the data mess picture in my Flying Solo profile).

Using my previous experience as an accountant and auditor, software sales agent, business owner, and data analyst, I consult to SME’s on how to manage their data through implementing the powerful Odoo system.

Odoo is used by over 7 million users worldwide and is rated as a market leader by Gartner and G2.  It is ERP, CRM, marketing, HR, inventory management, manufacturing, front end website, plus more – all rolled into one open-sourced system.  Combining all these data sources is a powerful tool to drive growth, enable data based decision making, and meeting customer wants and needs.
