How to build a strong and sustainable business in 2023 and beyond
As the new year progresses, many business owners are considering what is required for their business to expand and grow throughout 2023. There is nothing wrong with that, but are you also looking at the long-term future of your business? asks conscious business leader and educator, Gary Douglas.
One of the greatest mistakes made by companies and corporations is the unwillingness to look at the future and be aware of where things are going and what changes are required.
Take Kodak and Blockbuster for example. Once great companies, once the leaders in their industries. However, rather than seeing the future of their industries and looking at what change was required, they kept doing what they had always done. And when their industries changed, they were left behind.
Here are three things that are required to create a sustainable business in 2023, and beyond:
The willingness to change anything is what sets successful businesses apart. Being committed to ‘this is the way we do things’ and ‘this is the way it has always been done’ is a recipe for failure.
On the other hand, if you are willing to look at what is happening in your industry and ask questions and change what isnโt working or what could be greater, chances of failure diminish significantly.
Change is the only source of sustainability. Youโve got to look at what needs to be changed every day.
Business includes making a profit. However, when profit is the only thing that is considered, effective results are limited.
The truth is, there are always possibilities available if you are willing to look for them. Never give up. If you get stopped in one direction, donโt quit. Ask another question and find out what else you might be able to do that you havenโt considered. Keep asking questions. Keep looking for other possibilities.
Focusing on profits will benefit a few for a period of time, but when you look from possibility and ask questions such as, ‘What will create the most for all of us?’ and ‘What contributes to a sustainable future?’ you are creating a business that will not only thrive, but will actually contribute to a greater possibility for the world.
The future of business is not based on what you can buy or what you can do; it is based on the experiences you can provide that nobody else can.
An example of creating a business that provides experience is a castle that I own in Italy. In this digital world, itโs getting harder and harder to experience silence. The castle is a place where people can go to discover the elegance, beauty and sense of quiet that is difficult to find in our modern world.
Another example is a resort that I have created called El Lugar, extending over 1,200 acres at the heart of the rainforest in Costa Rica. El Lugar and the spaciousness and beauty of nature that it provides, is the beginning of teaching the world about the nurturance of the earth when you ask for its contribution.
In the creation of your business in 2023 and beyond, recognise that experiences will become the future of business as that is the only adventure left for mankind to have. Ask yourself, โWhat experience am I inviting people to have with my business?โ
When you are willing to ask questions and be aware of what change is required; when you look not just at profits, but also at maximising the possibilities that create for the good of all; and when you create your business as an experience for people, something that invites them to the adventure of living – you go beyond the status quo.
You move past the ‘business as usual’ that so many businesses function from, and step into the space of creating something greater. Something that thrives into the future.
