Soloist Spotlight: Danny Hile, Go Solo Startups

Danny Hile, Go Solo Startups spotlight feature

Our Soloist Spotlights showcase the services our amazing Flying Solo Business Class members offer to customers in Australia, and take a peek behind the curtain of their day-to-day lives. This week, meet Danny Hile, founder and manager of Go Solo Startups!

What do you do? Who for? And how does it benefit them?

I believe everyone brings unique value to the world and itโ€™s what they choose to do with those unique skills that separates successful people from everyone else. My mission is to help people find joy in what they do, time for what they love and space for what matters most to them.

My philosophy in business is to prioritise health and happiness because whatever you do needs to be sustainable in the long run. Even a successful business will ultimately fail if you burn out, lose energy or lose motivation to see it through.

When did you know you wanted to start your own business?

Always. As a teenager, I used to keep notebooks and scribble new business ideas as I thought of them.

Share your proudest moment

Graduation from my Master of Business and Commerce degree. I worked so hard and I donโ€™t feel particularly academic, so for me, it was a great achievement.

Whatโ€™s your number one way to wind down?

Reading or writing, if itโ€™s not on a screen or a device where I receive notifications.

Whatโ€™s the best thing about being a soloist? And the worst thing?

The best thing is autonomy. The worst thing is loneliness and isolation.

The best piece of business advice youโ€™ve ever been given?

Focus on your core business and the niche you serve.

Where and when do you have your best ideas?

In the shower, walking or driving in silence.

What would be your advice to aspiring soloists?

Youโ€™re in business for yourself, not by yourself. Reach out for support and build a network around you.

What would your parents say is your greatest strength? And weakness?

My parents would say I am a deep thinker but I have found a good balance between thought and acting.

My weakness is that I take comments of those closest to me to heart.

What inspires you most about your work?

I enjoy the creative process of identifying an unmet need and then inventing a solution.

Share the biggest challenge you face at work?

Teaching people about marketing because too many think marketing is just paid advertising, promotion or sales. Marketing actually starts with initial research for demand, product or service design, and decisions about your market or niche.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned this year?

Motivation and grit are the biggest determining factors for successful people. Having the drive to get out of bed and do what needs to be done every day takes discipline, but thatโ€™s exactly what helps you learn, build and grow – as a person or as a business.

And finally, what do you wear to work?

Depends on the day and what I am doing. Smart casual when I have meetings, however, I will dress down if I am working in isolation.
