Pick up the towel and have another crack in 2019

Have you ever felt like throwing in the towel? Disappointments and confusion can break the spirit. Sue Parker shares how she didnโ€™t give up on love and the importance of a shift of mindset in business.

Have you ever said to yourself โ€˜Iโ€™ve had enough, Iโ€™ve tried this many times and it didnโ€™t workโ€™ or โ€˜Iโ€™ve usedย up all my chancesโ€™ or โ€˜I have nothing leftโ€™ or โ€˜Iโ€™m doneโ€™?

You would not be alone there as anyone with a pulse would have definitely felt like throwing in the towel many times, and in many ways in their business and personal lives. ย And often we see certain towels being left to wither on the floor for years through fear, exhaustion and self-protection.

Back in late December 2011, I picked up one of those towels for another crack at my dreams and hopes. I was damn determined to not give up, despite historical evidence being contrary to success.

So, after a swelteringย hot Melbourne day I ventured into the cobblestone doorway of a coolย wine bar with a great new outfit. Thoughts were running wild as I crossed every body part that thisย meeting would be enjoyable with the hope of future success. A mixtureย of excitement, anticipation and nervousness jumped all over me.

Even though I am a bold extrovert, I still felt those butterflies in my stomach jumping around.

No matter how confident we appear on the outside, the inside voice of self-doubt is often deafening โ€“ after all we are not robots but humans.

Now this was not a business meeting or a new client pitch but an RSVP online date.ย It was indeed the 20th RSVP dateย Iย had clocked up during that year of 2011. Was I a sucker for punishment or just delusional? Neither.ย I just had strong intent.

Inย those 12 months I metย severalย guys who Iย liked very much but the feelings werenโ€™t mutual.ย Conversely, many thoughtย I wasย the beeโ€™s knees but I didnโ€™t feel the same way. And there were a couple ofย real โ€˜nastiesโ€™ย in that mix together with someย delightful guys who became good friends.

Butย the right match had been elusive and Iย refused toย simply settle for anyone because for me being single wasnโ€™t much fun. I was determined to attract my ideal mate. Ah, the myriad of emotions that one feels at being โ€˜rejectedโ€™ and also being โ€˜the rejecterโ€™. But I just never gave up โ€“ with my Mumโ€™s mantraย singing in my psyche โ€“ย โ€˜where there is life there is hopeโ€™.

It was bloody hard mind you not to pack it all in and move to anย isolated hut in the bush never to return to dating and relationships again. But there wasย thisย niggle insideย thatย just wouldnโ€™t let meย wallow for more than a weekย or so at a timeย (albeit underย a doonaย with a gin and tonic by my side).

Now my relationship story goes far deeper than just the 12 months prior to theย auspiciousย date of 29ย December 2011 which would change my life forever.ย On that date there I wasย at 51 years old with two failed marriages and three broken engagements behind me.

Yes, my relationship history was ratherย unfortunate to say the least. But I took responsibility for all ofย itย in some way and didnโ€™t play the โ€˜Iโ€™ve been done wrongโ€™ song or โ€˜there are no good men out thereโ€™.ย  Some relationships were nightmares and some were simplyย unfulfilling. And some I simply screwed up myself. But I never gave up hope that theย rightย relationship was out there waiting somewhere.

But (and hereโ€™s the rub)ย to meet my ideal partner I needed to lookย pretty candidly at myselfย in the mirror andย work onย what needed to be changedย to attract the right relationship. It was time to face the truth and step up and be the driver of my future.ย I needed to get fitter,ย lose weight,ย undertake counselling sessions,ย enrolย in self-development courses, review old beliefs, read aย lot, and try new ideas. And I had to do an inventory of my external world andย throw awayย nonsense and negative people.

I had to become the sort of person that my ideal soulmate would be attracted to. I had to focus onย being theย best version of me.ย Not a different meย but the highest version I could work to and with. It was not about moulding myself to another personโ€™s wishes – no way.ย  It was about taking the excuses out of what my why was for prior issues and to be whom I truly wanted to be – for my own self-esteem and worth. And by virtue that would automatically attract of like. ย I lay the foundations andย I just never gave up hope in myself or indeedย in other people.

How many times do we hear colleagues, friends, clients, family, staff etc play the โ€˜Iโ€™ve been done wrong songโ€™ย bemoaningย โ€˜there are no good men, women, jobs, clients, careers out thereโ€™? How often do we hearย โ€˜Iโ€™ve tried those services before and they didnโ€™t workโ€™?ย  Or I will never go there again itโ€™s a waste of timeโ€™?

Such negativityย doesnโ€™t cut it with me and it shouldnโ€™t cut it for anyone else who seeks to grow and improve in their business or life.ย  The reason for not trying again is generally fear – and it’s fear of yourself to not make a mistake again.

Fast forward to 2019 and I have been happily marriedย to my 3rd thirdย and final husband for many years resultant from that cobblestoned wine bar meeting from 2011. Heย was soย worth the wait andย I am grateful I didnโ€™t give up (like so many do).

I share this toย encourage others to keep going and believe in themselves. No matter howย unpleasant or hopeless you feelย your business, life or relationship situationย has or is, just keep trying and believing.ย If you are breathingย keep going.

Donโ€™t give up on finding and attracting better clients, a new job, great manager,ย starting a new business, changing careers, findingย yourย soulmate or next relationship. Get up and have another crackย BUTย do it with a new outlook, differentย tools, insights, ideas and beliefs.ย Work on yourself and have some fun along the way testing andย refining.

Not giving up is not for the faint of heart. You will have more ups and downs than a roller coaster and experience set-backs and failures many timesย in business. It may be with clients, suppliers, staff or networks. But that is ok IF you take a mirror to learn,ย develop and keep going.
